Tier 2 Fire Investigation CPD events
It is important that Fire Investigators keep abreast
of fire science, research, evolving practices and new technology.
It has become more important than ever for the fire investigator to continually develop their knowledge and skills
and to undertake informal and formal Continued Professional Development (25 hours per annum).

FireWise design, facilitate and deliver, at your venue, engaging UK-AFI accredited CPD events
or programmes across the Fire Investigation syllabus.

The current program is outlined below, with some narrative of what is covered, to help your team identify and
choose sessions against their training need:

Conducting Investigations - (a team standardisation day) the Why and the How? FI ‘career path’, single./multi agency investigations, Decision making, Investigation Strategy, Risk Management, Methodical approach, Scientific Method, Sources of information, Evidence identification, documentation, preservation & collection, Analysis & research, Origin & Cause determination, accuracy, ‘most likely’, Reporting, Preparing & Presenting evidence and Legal considerations? Case Studies (complex, multi agency working)

Human Behaviour, Serious Injury & Fatal fires - self immolation/suicide by fire, Human Behaviour, Investigation approach & scene management, PPE/barrier clothing & Anti-contamination, Documenting, evidence & DVI/recovery, Case studies, Outputs, Coroners – reporting, attending, presenting and Fire Investigation Wellbeing & Mental Health. Practical - 'body' examination and evidence recovery

Electricity & Fires - basic electrical distribution, Investigator safety, common causations. Practical using 'Live board', using test equipment, distribution mapping, and electrical item examination.

Smart Homes, Solar & DESS, LiB and White Goods fires - from smart devices, power generation, power storage, small LiB devices, EV charging and White Goods (practical examination).

Smouldering fires - 'spontaneous combustion, self heating fires, wildland fires, upholstery & furnishings smoking materials

Deliberate fires - Fuels, Ignitable Liquids, patterns and Arson Including practical - Hot Surface Ignition, burning IGLs on different substrates, making and using Molotov cocktails and incendiary devices!! And after creating residues, practical IGL detection using PIDs and K9s.

Explosions, deflagrations & detonations - from gaseous/vapour fires, dust fires, Vapour Cloud Explosions, and practicals including (making & using) black powder/pyrotechnics, aerosol/gas cylinder explosion and low order incendiary devices.

Digital Evidence - This requires liaison with & engagement by your local Police force (CCTV/Imaging and Small Devices units) on how evidence can be gathered from imaging and devices to support fire investigation.

Vehicle fires - we can deliver a one day vehicle fires CPD session (with practical if this can be facilitated at a suitable site) however we also deliver the renowned UK-AFI accredited Vehicle Fire Investigation courses (20 hours CPD), now in their 26th year. This 3 day course delivered in Ireland four times a year includes 8-10 vehicle burns and examinations, vehicle identification, component examination, Hot Surface Ignition,and evidence recovery. Both ICE and Electric Vehicles are included. FRS tend to send two delegates per course, to train all FIs within a two year period. Delegates are from across sectors leading to great learning and sharing of knowledge and experience.

Skills - around particular subject matter we can add in practical sessions including evidence recovery, photography, barrier clothing, glass interpretation etc. We can conduct 'proficiency testing' across your team to support consistency and compliance.

The program continual evolves, and bespoke sessions can be designed and delivered against any local/specific needs.
